I hadn't heard about the parents changing gender in books but I can imagine it would be exhausting. I have already been bookmarking a few links that feature good children's books that aren't too stereotyped.

No problem, Sarah!Hannah Mudgehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06367085612049349757noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-327544553976967122.post-46857358547674558572012-04-26T23:14:31.926+01:002012-04-26T23:14:31.926+01:00Amelia, have you read Whipping Girl by Julia Serra...Amelia, have you read Whipping Girl by Julia Serrano? It's a very impressive tract on femininity by a trans woman – so someone who's very conscious that gender isn't inevitably a match with social expectations based on the physical body, but also that her feminine identity is a powerful part of who she is. The book doctoring parents are in Cordelia Fine's Delusions Of Gender, also outstanding.

Hannah – thanks for quoting me in this brilliant post :)Sarah Ditumhttp://www.sarahditum.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-327544553976967122.post-80649471019073873472012-04-26T19:26:49.894+01:002012-04-26T19:26:49.894+01:00You might have a genderqueer, genderfluid or trans...You might have a genderqueer, genderfluid or trans* kid also. Things like colours and toys are gendered from the outside, they're not inherently gendered, nor do they gender the person wearing/playing with them. Have you heard about the parents who basically removed gender from their kids story books? Tippexing out he/she and putting 'they'? And also swapping genders over, so little red riding hood is a boy, and so on. Interesting, but exhausting, I'd imagine.Amelia Janehttp://thatfuckinghippy.infonoreply@blogger.com
